Wrest Within

by Kate Demeree

The creature called to her from that deepest sea of dreams. In the time when the clock’s tick and creaking boards loose all connection to reality and the human psyche.

She, woken from slumber abruptly, lay frowning at the darkness.
Once more he called to her.  She shivered to the bone chilled through, yet was compelled to rise and walk to the glass.

No candles flame ever flicked shadow ghosts on the wall to match that which she beheld within the wooden frame. Her mind quested what manor of being would thus call to her. Apprehension written in the lines of her stance, still she did not move, or attempt to turn away. Instead her eyes locked on the mirror. Amid the smoke shadows in the foggy glass were two amber orbs surrounded by flame.

In the circle of flame transposed upon the amber orb to her left was a hawk in flight. Trapped within the other orb was a sparrow. He spoke to her mind and spirit saying, “Somewhere between the two lies the path that you must follow.”

Though questions rose to her lips she uttered not a word, standing mute before the glass.

The flame flickered, the orbs cleared, now golden flecks danced in the flame circles. She spoke “Why call you to me? Now in this hour when the clock strikes not, why speak you who have spoken not?”

Once again his voice entered her mind “I have spoken to you countless times, the choice to hear, the willingness to see has and does rest with you”

Enchanting in both the images and the message... fate and fortune captured in that smokey region between sleep and wake. Beautiful, Kate.
