Watering My Mind

by David R Spellman

Quite naturally I was drawn
down the steep wooded slope
to land upon the river’s edge.
Oblivious to my presence,
unconcerned with current events,
its timeless slipstream passage made
our meeting merely matter of course.

I knew the falls were there and
made my way to their base where
selecting a well-worn polished rock
I found comfort in its cool embrace,
and settled into a meditative state
focusing on the water sounds which
flowed unencumbered to my ears.

Each tier of the falls cried out
in separate harmony while
the force of the lower one echoed
against an opposite rock wall
lapping in gentle waves upon that
moss and lichen clothed drum.

At my feet it seemed to reverberate
in pools of stereophonic melodies
following no orchestrated rhythm,
yet no maestro could compose such
masterful chords nor conduct the notes
which quenched a thirst I had not known.

Upon opening my eyes once more
I spied the silvered mist issuing forth
like a fresh spray of mountain breath
exhaling the whisper of a rainbow which
had yet eluded capture by my shuttered mind
but whose memory has now left me
nurtured by the compositions left behind,
impressions injected into the beat of my being.

Great read! You communicate the 'feel' of the river and falls superbly. It is a falls I may have seen many, many years ago when on the Blue Ridge Parkway. (Quite a parkway for sights, hiking, and camping.)

Cleansing poetry, Dave. Becoming one with nature is undoubtedly the most healing experience we shall know and you have illustrated this in magnificent reverie. I bow in humble praise. Peace...

Since we are composed mostly of water, it certainly does speak to our soul, especially in this wonderful vignette you've captured!

Soothing, calming are words that come to mind after reading this David. Great title also considering the text.

You so skillfully craft this story in wordpictures that I am left awakened from that meditation with mist on my face and a travelyearning in my heart. Brilliant, David.
