With Wings As Eagles

by Melissa Arel

I smile when I think of you growing alongside of me
Slowly stepping out onto that cliff's ledge
Looking below, ready to take flight
Claws gripped to the rock
Scraping the mountainside
Prepping your feathers for the wind to carry you
Turning to see the nest of leaves and branches -
The only place you've known til this moment

But fate has granted you liberty to soar
To find yourself in a world you try so hard to leave behind
Your eyes watering from the sun's bright glow
Spread your wings long, exposed to the sky
Dive headfirst into the canyon, to live or die
So strong and beautiful
Ridding yourself of all
But love..
