Ink On Poet

by Derek Gregory

Poets hide behind words
Artists behind brush strokes
I hide behind ink on my body
Sun and moon entwine
With a Celtic dragon
Splashing color on my left arm
A black HorusÂ’ eye
Protects my right arm
Stabbing needles
Push out feelings of
Loneliness and monotony
The more Ink
The more I disappear
Until people only see tattoos
Not me
They see stereotypes
Not my art or words

I admit I see stereotypes when I see people with a lot of tatoos. What's a Horus?

Well, 'stereotypes' is what this common belief system believes in and can see. For them if its common its NORMAL. SEEING beneath , well, they cannot. SEEING WHAT IS is beyond their capacity. Well said.

Interesting capture Derek. I've always seen tatoos as unsightly if only for the fact that to me variety is the spice of life, and once a tatoo's on there, it never changes, and thus loses its impact, so I especially like the truth of the last six lines. Congrats on POTD...well deserved, and continued success with your poetry.

I liked reading what's behind getting a tattoo, and I felt the last six lines gave it that extra dimension of truth. Congrats on POTD!

This is beautiful. Being on the inside seeing through your eyes, yet also being on the outside looking in, beyond the tattoo. I love listening to the inside-speak, and this POTD. Congratulations!

"Stabbing needles Push out feelings of Loneliness and monotony"...that's a fantastic observation. You've used a beautiful art form to celebrate a beautiful art form here. Nice job.

Belated congratulations on this POTD. I found it fascinating. I only have one tattoo but have thought of getting another frog or maybe just frog prints... somewhere. Mine is on my lower back, just below scars that look like whip marks, so my primary purpose was to distract with something that has a special meaning for me and my little prince is just charming! ;-D Truly enjoyed this poem.
