The Fragrance of Dried Flowers

by Rhodora M Fitzgerald

Our love was once like a solitary flower
soft, beautiful, strong and fragrant
yet it hopelessly struggled
to stay alive in a hostile world.

It was a flower that grew rapidly
from that first "hello"...
It was fed and nourished
by acts of endearment
and showered with love.

Regretfully, a flower can perish
just as quickly as it blooms,
and neglect can cause the hardiest rose
to shrivel and die.

Thus,
With heavy heart
and weighted sigh
With saddened face
and tearful eye...
The flower faded
and only a sweet fragrance lingered
as the petals fell.

Sad...what happens to a rose when not properly taken care of. Good stuff, as usual. :)

Hi Rhodora, It's lovely, but yet sad. Somtimes that happens in life. Pace & Joy, Jean

A sad truth of life expressed well here. If we are fortunate, perhaps fond memories just like the remaining fragrance will linger with us long afterwards. Well done.

A delectible metaphoric rendition of a delicate situation. Nicely scripted, Rhodora. Peace...

Wonderful earthy imagery... I love the contrasts and comparisons... well crafted.

Yes, sweet and soft poem ... I wish I could talk about dying stories this way ... The metaphor is great, not overworked, great balance!
