Lost in Oz

by David R Spellman

Where yellow brick roads left
paled with tarnished gilding
descending like forked tongues
into spiraling dead-end streets;
and no thoroughfare led
to glistening Emerald cities,
no magic ruby red slippers
carried my wishes home.

Amalgamated into empty
lost fabled characters without
even the simple knowledge
of what I was missing though
I did enjoy the poppies
and sleep, sleep was not
the fields I sought nor
was found in those enchanted
forests where I flew off
on the backs of monkeys
fleeing to which directions
who at least knew that
they had some place,
some castle in the sand
which slipped away like
ballast through an hourglass
left unswept by powerless brooms
burned and melted by desires,
memories singed by lullabies,
wishes that any wizard could
grant without me answering
the dreams that somewhere
even lost among the tempest
birds do fly beyond where
I would be able to go –

if I only had a rainbow...

This is really an excellent write, David. The use of imagery from the Wizard Of Oz was flawless.. great read!

Excellent David. One of my favorite movies nice applied to in complex metaphor to our all too real world.

This caught my eye simply with the title, and as I read I could feel the empty hollow feeling one gets when dreams do not come true. If I had a rainbow.... I would give it to you, My Friend *hugs*

Literary allusions abound and are very brilliantly meshed together. This poem is to be read over and over again. Differing facets of meaning glisten as the mind turns this gem in its light.

Your poem is a bit of a rainbow on a dreary day...Charlie

Loved this piece David! The rainbow is one of lifes little pleasures that we experience all too infrequently, but then.... I guess they wouldn't be so "special" if we saw them everyday, right? What I liked about this piece was the feeling the reader gets of reaching beyond the rainbow... the place we all long to go. :o)

Just read this one again. I was correct, a poem to be savored again and again.
