Waiting for Dinner Guests

by Glenn Currier

Encased in this crystal-windowed place
I sit thinking of friends’ brisk embrace.
They will soon arrive from roads
slick with melted and refrozen snows.

The music moves me from Eureka to Rome,
from Vienna and Beverly Hills to home,
from harmonic chords of Italian men
to children’s joy and back again.

The table is set in silver and white
With care and precision—a glorious sight.
The scent of sweet potato and carrot glaze
and pies and casserole that will amaze.

Outside the hills softly glisten
hear steps of deer if you listen
smell chimney’s smoke, breathe cool air
feel winter breeze through your hair.

Touch hardness of icicle and softness of snow
Hear all sounds in pianissimo
anticipating raised glasses and friendship toasts
to years of joy for our two hosts.
Waiting here for the dinner guests
I know I am loved and richly blessed.

Author's Note: Dedicated to our two wonderful friends Earl and Richard whose home is in the hills outside of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, and who hosted us for a beautiful white Christmas (perhaps longer than they would have liked due to our being snow-bound).

Eureka Springs is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been... how I envy you to have spent time there, snowbound in the mountains. I read through this and felt the warmth and saw the beauty - when you mentioned Eureka Springs it became even more real. You did capture the essence of that exceptional place, let alone the warmth of true friendship. (Go back in the autumn... the maples and oaks are amazing... and then write another one about it! Okay, and then go in the spring when the dogwoods and redbuds are out...)

Great reminder that true richness doesn't come from money but from love and friendship. Your last few postings have been truly talented in their construction and expression, and a joy to read Glenn. Thanks for sharing them. Happy New Year!

You have not only succeeded in capturing the SCENE but also the atmosphere. More over, you have also succeeded in transmitting the positive impression/vibration, you gathered from the SCENE.
