I Used to Believe in Magic...

by David R Spellman

and fairy tales that
spoke of fiery dragons
or faeries sheltered
under four leaf clovers
leprechauns that when
captured the pot of gold
was mine and monsters
under my bed would
come to life in the night
stealing me away to
lands filled with ogres
trolls and grinches where
Providence’s angels would
suddenly appear and out of
nowhere make me a knight
saving the beautiful damsel
held captured and distressed
thinking I wanted her and
the adventure to continue
the excitement enchanting
me to imagine that I would
never have to grow old
and forget that the dust
had settled and worn off
in my dreams I wait
for it to be renewed

How wonderful life can be as long as we can still believe in fairytales!! Nice read David! Thanks for letting me see again how magical it still can be!!!

The previous comments mirror my own thoughts/reaction to this epic tale in a nutshell, Sir Lacelot or I should say Sir. David.

Recapturing an essential part of childhood. As adults it is a motivational part of our being called Imagination but we feel we have to keep it hidden lest we be considered childish! You insightfully indicate the need to (or desire to) catch again the excitement, curiosity, and enchantment of childhood.

Someone told me to be childlike rather than "childish". Childlike being a combination of innocence, wonder, and wisdom. There's the free thought for the day. Nicely done. Now I wish the dern leprechauns and monsters would stop fighting under my bed. :)

That is the most descriptive and informative sentence I have ever read. Proof positive your magic is alive and well Dave. Peace...

and renewed it is with this poem... isn't this art a miracle (if not magic) in the way it dusts off dreams and oils jammed up joints and makes us fly? You worked your magic with this one, David.

I love the lack of punctuation in this - it sounds like a breathless, excited child... the ending a bit sad...or maybe accepting... but still moving forward...
