between colours

by Betania Tesch

I press my iris
to the mirror
in search of
that fabled inner power
but I see only
braided ropes of colours
overlapping and
intertwining,
and hidden in the folds
is your hand
waving a signal
of distress,
but I cannot
reach between colours
while trapped
in this greyscale.

Ahh, I can still feel the cold press of silvered glass against the globe of my eye even after looking away to catch my breath. As with other poems of yours that I have had the pleasure to read, your familiarity with color, your ability to make their presence (and at times, in this poem, the lack of it) distinctly felt and seen and *tasted* is fantastic. Nothing short of the artists touch rendering such calm and quiet desperation. An excellent read!

Excellent combination of colour/colour terminology (greyscale) and relationship, Beth. Powerful opening also; I actually pictured you with your eye pressed to glass upon reading the line!

a vision of colour combination and collapse of hand to your side, when giving up seems inevitable...power little piece here...but colours will intensify soon...*s*

Bethany, my favorite part is the being trapped in that space between the meetings of love and a lovers in need... the gray gave me the image of clouds with little light filtering through to illumine and vitalize. Your single comma was appreciated as a break in thought and syntax. The rhythm is easy and light as if to accentuate longing but not desparation. Very lovely poem, my dear and it is a joy to read it.

my favourite line: "I cannot reach between colours while trapped in this greyscale" A wonderful read...beautifully expressed!
