No Exit

by Glenn Currier

If tomorrow finds me on death's bed
I could let go knowing you are here,
sure that affixed to your day
my shadow walks you to lunch.
Your torso recalls our hugs,
and your eyes ache for my smile.
Unlike the bureaucracy's
quick condolence--
a death - a blip before the new hire,
the grip of these friends
would not soon suspend.

The thought of losing you does not drift.
It skulks a deep dark canyon
approaching in the night,
a howling wounded wolf.

Exit you my world--
exit me an eye of self
an ear of music
an arm of history
cast a right hand,
sink me into the murk.

How vast and porous the boundaries
of our brotherhood,
and how tightly our Brothers link
and weave themselves into this sacred cloth.

Exit you this bond--
exit us the wink of your quips
the glow of your mind
the amber of your heart.

So stay a while, my friend
on whom I so depend
and journey back here soon--
I await your lyric tune.

Light in God's hold,
I bind you close to my soul.

Dedicated to my friend Joe before his surgery.

your ailing friend is notheless fortunate to have an anchor such as you. With these words you display the meaning of brother keeping. Peace, Phil
