Tales Untold by Julie Adams
Melancholy monologues of the
male kind
tell tales of boys
training for fatherhood
before identity is molded
before maturity has unfolded
before they know how to verbalize confusion
the weighty anvil of expectation
has our boys on defense
& combat
requires trenches
where dreams are
stowed & stored
sinful, like rations
waiting to expire
in a manÂ’'s world
boys are processed to
play hardball
deny emotion
maintain control
support others
be a man
[sorry, no PC definition available]
Melancholy monologues of the
male kind
will eventually tell
the tale of torn hearts,
& broken spirits,
men we call brothers, fathers, sons
hardened from within
with board certified, man-made
blues on tap,
under breath
but tales left untold still
decay within the silent heart
of men, who know:
boys need to be boys,
before they can grow to be men

Posted by Alex Smyth on 06/02/09 at 02:00 PM Julie, this is absolutely astounding. As a daughter/sister/(former)spouse/mother my heart is restored with great tenderness for the men in my life that have lived the struggle you give insight to here. Bravo for the posting, and heartfelt congratulations on POTD! |

Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 06/07/09 at 06:08 PM So true Julie, but in some cases...not all, for both sexes I think. Very well presented, a thought provoking piece of culture to be sure. And congrats also on POTD; I didn't catch it until now. |
