Tears of a Weeping Willow

by Melissa Arel

I sat there beneath an old willow
And felt the summer breeze dance in my hair,
My sunshine curls swayed in rhythm
With the branches as it swung me high in the sky -
I caught a cloud and put it in my pocket
And laughed with joy that hot summmer day
As childhood skipped across my brow of blonde.

Sweet weeping willow, don't cry for me
My life is just beginning.

I sat there beneath an old willow
And felt the autumn air twirl my long locks,
My amber strands played in unison
With the branches as it swung me
Low to the green grass - I tickled a puddle
And smiled with happiness that crisp fall evening
As adolescence strolled across my brow of brown.

Sweet weeping willow, don't cry for me
Hold your tears for another time.

I sat there beneath an old willow
And felt the frosty chill crawl up my neck
My faded crown layed there still
Like the branches, quietly
As it hugged me close to its core
I rested on that cold winter morning
As adulthood walked across my brow of grey.

Sweet weeping willow, don't cry for me
My life is worth the living.

I sat there beneath an old willow
And felt the spring rain drip onto my face
My white hair loosely fell, dampened
Like the branches as it shook with grief
I tenderly wept on that fresh, spring afternoon
As life stopped skipping, strolling, walking
Across my brow.

Sweet weeping willow, its okay to cry for me now
Don't hold your tears for another day,
Life has come and gone.

I sat beneath the branches of that old tree
And we both cried.
The rain fell gently on my cheek in silence,
As salty drops of my own fell
And rolled down the bark
There I sat, wiping the tears
Of an old weeping willow tree.

My sweet, sweet weeping willow.
