CATERPILLAR PIE

by Charles E Minshall

___________________________

You're invited to a party,
A gourmet feast,
To dine on elephant
Or some other beast.

A dinner aperitif
Of blended moths will be served,
In goat horn containers
That are fancy curved.

Be sure not to miss
The termites on ice,
With a sauce of snail slime
To give them some spice.

You should also try
The killer bee feet,
Dipped in chocolate
A very rare treat.

For the dessert course
Fresh caterpillar pie,
Garnished with the wings
Of a butterfly.

Children's pretend cooking
Is cooking quite easy.
Pretend with them
If your stomachs not queasy.

This poem is a great read-a-loud for children! It's outrageous absurdity surely would bring squeals of horror from the girls (who with all their protestations will love it) and wide grins from the boys. I can hear all the "yucks" and "uhhhs" now! And the "ymmmys" and smacking lips from the boys (who will pretend to like the idea of the food to tease the girls).

Kind of disgusting ingredients here...(at least to me now...) :) But a very cute way to write this poem! Love it! ~Mel~

Hi Charles, Good one. Sounds like a kid, hee! Hee! They would surely love it. I'll pass on supper with them. Hee! Hee! Longs as it not in really real in life, shouldn't be too bad to pretend with them. Then again, so might say.

cute in a queasy sort way. would be tempted to send to sister-in-law for nephew, but she'd probably strangle me when he tried some of those tasty dishes.

Indeed a fun kids poem, but I'd get rid of the last verse really. Its kind of superfluous, and of course not appropriate if you target it at kids anyhow

Smile smile chuckle. Gees, this poem brings back memories - still accessible even as old as I am - of moments of imagination in childhood. Delightful poem, Chaz.

...I still pretend. Miss you Charles....love the legacy of your poetry that lives on....

I was drawn to read this poem this morning because of a little ditty my daughter (now 32) used to sing in Kindergarten in New Orleans named Alligator pie. I have two granddaughters now age 1 and 3. I think I will teach this poem to the 3 years old. It is delightful. Thank you.
