Who

by Philip F De Pinto

Who is privy
to knowing beforehand
where they are going?

What month or year
or day?

What thief
whispered it
or lit

such a candle
brief
In the chapel

of your ear.

Philip, hello. It has been a very long time since reading your poetry. I am glad to see you alive and writing still. This one 🎯. I love this beautiful and uniquely composed poem expressing the mystery of life, destiny and death. A favorite metaphor- the candle-expresses our short lives reviewed inside [The "chapel of your ear"] represents the intimate sacred, quiet inner mind for prayer or contemplation of inevitable death, provoked by the thief (death)- By placing the candle there, suggests the spark of life and sudden awareness of how precious and limited time is. Our lifespan is unpredictable, variable, uniquely personal and an internally sacred experience. The Illusion of control masks our inherent vulnerability. We will all face this mystery no matter who we are. Life is fleeting, its end is unpredictable, and the knowledge of our time on earth is indeed, a sacred mystery. This is literary excellence.

No thief or other entity has informed me of my expiration date, but before recent anesthesia I said "F**k me" prior to being put under; I liked these as my last words just in case. I've been dipping my toe into the sea of existential dread lately. Much enjoyed your poem!
