The Last Dance by Richard VinceAlthough I don’t really dance,
Perhaps I would have danced
At your wedding, a final goodbye
To the last crush of my
Late adolescence.
But we will never know: I bombed
That bridge before it could
Collapse under the weight of
All the hope and expectation
We piled upon it.
(Yes: we. As much as you tried
To hide them in the past,
Your words lived in my memory,
Though I never fully understood
What they meant.)
Could that last dance have
Finally allowed me to move on
And become the friend you
Always deserved, or was that
An even bigger fantasy?
