I snuck out early this morning
just after the stores opened at 9AM
hopped in a cab for a destination
normally walked to but not today
temperature already oppressive
at 30 degrees in the wake of
yesterday’s record breaking 46 Humidex
and these legs don’t work like
they used to

The trip has been preplanned
bing – bang – boom
out in a flash then right back in
strategic shopping at its best before
the temperature gets too much higher
I ask the cabbie to wait
while I head into the first store
then off to the second destination

It’s there that we part ways
“Might see you later”
after making another purchase
it’s only a short walk to the
pharmacy and supermarket
then back home in another cab

Feels good to be out and about
despite the heat and right hip
that with or without exercise
aches more frequently
on any given day

Now I finally understand how
my father became so sedentary
mother took to walking a dog
and gardening
