Summer '72

by Chris Sorrenti

    for cousin, Randy

Yeah, I remember the summer I saved the day
a straight A student ha ha
barely passing into next grade
having spent July in class
for French and Math
happy to have all that school work behind
and on to relaxation, what sun was left

Me and Randy, we was cool
those great summer nights
great card fights
drinkin’ stolen beers
ev’rybody camping out on the land
beside Mississippi Lake in August

And the pinball place
down by the boats
sitting with pretty girls
in the game playing area
yeah, we’d blow our dough all day to
A Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress

The kids reminded me of Trenton
and all the other bases
both Randy and me having been
air force and army brats
and my first girlfriend
a little blonde named Karen
I had to leave behind
all gone now, but a haze in my mind

There was always a fire going somewhere
getting my kicks listening to Americans
and their Utica conversations
the smell of Pine and water so clear
you could see clean through to a ten-foot bottom
helped everyone to relax
even I tried and did pretty well

So that summer was really one to remember
cause of the weather, the company, location
and everything else, just one in sixteen
