Dropping The Writ by Chris Sorrenti
Ottawa South has been staunchly Liberal
all levels of government
as far back as I can remember
having been in this neighborhood for 35 years
with a bad habit of rooting for the underdog
when unable to stomach the alternative
I like Mark Carney
his worldly financial experience
what he says and the way he carries himself
but after ten years of Liberal government
running this country into the ground
chasing unrealistic ideology
it’s time for a change
but not another of the so-called elite
There are things I like and don’t like
about Conservative Pierre Poilievre
but which man would I prefer to have a beer with?
as he and Carney promise
the moon stars and all points in-between
but as they say
talk is cheap during an election
The debates are coming
a chance to see the leaders go toe to toe
but with the Conservatives trailing Liberals
in the latest polls
unless one of them really blows it
my prediction is Carney and his Liberals
will win a minority government
Best to keep the banker on a tight leash
till we know him better

04/10/2025 Author's Note: Apparently the expression “Drop the writ” is a misnomer, but as with many things in the English language, has taken on a life of its own. Uniquely Canadian, it has become accepted to mean when the Prime Minister goes to the Governor General to request that Parliament be dissolved, so that an election can get under way.
