Shall I Rhyme? by Chris Sorrenti
Shall I rhyme
as I once did in the early days?
when the free verse beast
had yet to awaken
It would be no crime
if I should rhyme
again and again
as long as not to
outwear my welcome
with the kind folks
who pay the spiritual bills
And if I should rhyme
from time to time
you dear readers
will be the first to know then
as you go and come
come and go
think of me fondly
as a jingle in your head
Meanwhile
there’s a dragon
locked inside my chest
clawing to get out
its staccato rhythm heartbeat
deafening until its fed
its own tale
Wonder what would happen?
if instead I gave it a
rhyme or two...or three
and that is why I dare to ask
from time to time
as Shakespeare himself
may have in his own way
To rhyme or not to rhyme?
That is always the question!
