January 29th Dream

by Chris Sorrenti

I sometimes dream about being back at work. Not as often as I used to. When first retired, 12 years ago, they recurred on a regular basis. Some were pleasant, while others, nightmares of a different kind.

Sometimes, I’m retired, and for some odd reason, go back, something I would never seriously entertain in reality. In some of these dreams, I know I’m retired, yet happy to back and help at the office, confident in knowing the job like the back of my hand. What made it easy was knowing I didn’t really have to be there, and could leave at any time. I’ve always awoken before that happens.

On other occasions, it’s as if I’ve never left, and early this morning was such a dream. In reality, it was snowing steadily outside, and blowing, with a -21 windchill, and I was glad to be indoors. After breakfast, I lay down on the couch, to watch a little TV, before getting ready to go out shopping for groceries later on. It was payday, and despite the weather, the cupboards and fridge were almost bare. Guess I dozed off, and next thing you know, I was working again, but yet to go into the office, this particular day.

I was talking to someone on the phone, but no one I recognized or remembered from my past, about our upcoming meeting later today, reassuring him I’d be there. The meeting was supposed to be somewhere along Highway 401, between Ottawa and Toronto, though never clear where or how far.

Initially, I was going to drive, though could also take the train, and with it snowing outside, figured the train would be the better option. As I contemplated what lay ahead, I quickly grew apprehensive and agitated about going out at all. Finally, I decided to either call in sick or just say that I couldn’t make it on account of the weather.

Then I woke up, immediately realizing...remembering in relief...I’m retired.
