As if we Canadians don’t have enough to worry about. True, inflation is down, but the cost of food and other commodities remain high, and when coupled with shrinkflation, little wonder food banks and soup kitchens struggle to keep up with demand.
There’s a housing shortage due to over immigration, which also adds to the above problem. Canada needs (skilled) immigrants to survive, but the current federal government didn’t have the foresight to update and coordinate with provincial and municipal government its housing policy. The whole issue of immigration has been dumped literally on the doorstep of provinces and municipalities, who are now screaming to the federal government for funding to deal with the problem.
And now the stage is set below the border for another four years. What many Americans don’t realize, is whether we like it or not, their President is also Canada’s President, if not the entire free world’s. What happens in the States affects us above the border, either directly or indirectly. Tariffs can be a two-way street; so much for Free Trade. It’s understandable why the US would want to deport illegal immigrants, but Canada has no more room.
As far as the new administration is concerned, despite his past, I wish Donald Trump the best of luck. Maybe those two brushes with death have changed him for the better. Stranger things have happened. For one man to fix all the woes of a country, complex as the United States, is a tall order. Only time will tell.
