Grey Gardens

by Chris Sorrenti

An interesting documentary
on TCM
elderly mother
middle aged daughter
share a dilapidated mansion
I immediately see the parallel
between me and my son
our forever home smaller
only in square footage

For them it’s 1975
obvious how much has changed in 50 years
but as often the case
time has no meaning
reclusive
they mainly occupy
only a couple of rooms

My son and I still have
our own bedrooms
while they’ve chosen for convenience
to share a room with single beds
where they eat (ice box and hot plate included)
food is delivered
sleep lounge reminisce
pour over newspapers and photographs
recalling
there was no Internet back then

Edie the younger dances
in her tight dress and pantihose
still an attractive woman at 58
of the Bouvier Jack Kennedy lineage
recites Robert Frost’s
The Road Not Taken
when not sunbathing on the deck
swimming in the ocean nearby
she had wanted to be a writer
was published in her teen years
but as with us all
Life got in the way

"Oh, the humanity!"
cried the reporter
when the Hindenburg
crashed and burned
at Lakehurst, New Jersey
not that far away from
East Hampton, Long Island
where this all takes place

Yes, oh the humanity, indeed
