Labor Day Monday 2024

by Chris Sorrenti

Almost immediately
the first vestiges of autumn
begin to settle in
a cold winter predicted
for eastern Canada
by the Farmer’s Almanac

But there is comfort
in the brisk air
September’s welcoming sunlight
in contrast to
the baked humidity
of only days before
tree leaves still green
but for how long?

And with the happiness
there is also sadness
this time of year
momentary as it may be
a special friend
who shared a love
for this month
and the one beyond
since taken to the sky
a thunderbird
in her own right

Now it’s been long enough
to sometimes wonder
if we happened at all
and with it
a timeless reminder...

Gone are
the days and ways of the past
there’s a new poetry
rising up from the old
