The Watcher

by Chris Sorrenti

Not many friends these days
except the electronic kind
when not cleaning eating or sleeping
out and about
I bounce back and forth between
computer and TV
each giving the other ideas
if you know what I mean

And as I watch realize
there’s no way to retain
all that’s taken in
at least in this mortal state of mind

Often bored and restless
I accept this as my penance
for surviving into old age
the ultimate test of perseverance
to be truly an icon of patience
for what lies ahead
with a message from above:

All that’s been learned
in your time on Earth
even what’s forgotten
not understood
in Heaven
without mortal distraction
will be crystal clear
