Come August
water melon pulp
turns rubbery
a sure sign Fall is on the way

Though available year round
as for the aforementioned quibble
in this home a summer plant
not without consequence as

One of the highest in sugar thus
two or three months a year
just long enough for this diabetic
to enjoy one of his favorite fruit

Without dire threat till next year
and everyone is satisfied
as he harkens back to childhood and that
first taste without doctor’s fear
