Written In A New York Minute

by Chris Sorrenti

It never gets any easier
watching a dear friend
fight the battle of her life

And as helpless as you are
can take comfort at least in
you’ve let her know
she’s not entirely alone

Whereas unlike the previous
who begged me to come over
in the middle of a pandemic

But I refused - afraid
as it was just too dangerous
unknowing my last chance to see her alive

If this new friend needed my assistance
goes without saying
I’d be there in a New York minute

What a terrible way to learn and grow

Author's Note: According to my calculations, a New York Minute works out to roughly half an hour; the amount of time it took to write the poem. It's also the amount of time it takes to get to my friend's place.
