On a Distant Day in May

by Chris Sorrenti

As much as I may be a dreamer
I am also a realist
and knew even back then
we in what we were or weren’t
missing pieces and all
would be a difficult fit at best
at least in the traditional sense

You didn’t know I existed
nor did you even care
and that’s OK
but then again it wasn’t
the inner voice cried
“That girl has a role to play in your life,
but don’t ask me what it is.”

And of course
with the hormones running
I saw it only as romantic
the poetry machine having started up
only the previous year
and could say nothing but
“You’ve got to get in that girl’s face,
even if it breaks all the rules,
even if it takes an eternity.”

And as the saying goes
the rest is history
in the aftermath
greater scheme of things
you became my Earthbound muse

Does the end justify the means?
perhaps
but I do know this
if you were to ask me
if I could go back and do it all again
would I?

Despite any bad blood it caused us
in the beginning
the answer is a resounding YES!

Because
it is one of the greatest collections
of love poems ever written
thanks to the two stars
who inspired it

And proof positive
rejection can be a good thing
