Near the Path of Totality

by Chris Sorrenti

I am ready for the April 8th eclipse FB

I can’t recall the last time there ever was so much hoopla over an eclipse, but there again, the previous full solar one was in 1979, 45 years ago. In 2022, I did stay up to photograph the blood moon lunar eclipse. Managed to get a few nice shots, despite intermittent cloud cover, which caused me to lose out on the last part, when the moon returns to full.

This time, Ottawa missed the path of totality, but not by very far, and there was definitely some darkening of the sky, at the appropriate time in the afternoon. Didn’t miss out on anything though, thanks to my favorite 24/7 news channel. The ‘event’ was covered in all its phases, continuously, within the path of totality, from Niagara Falls to the province of Quebec, and on to the Maritimes.

Even just watching it on TV was a spiritual, if not religious experience, to go along with the moans and applause of the outdoors audiences. Despite all the trouble in the world, it’s nice to be reminded once in a while of how much the same, and in another sense, insignificant we all are.

It's eclipse not apocalypse
