Circles and Hexagons by Chris Sorrenti
Tucked away in a small cupboard
beneath mom and dad’s
fine oak hutch (inherited)
are colorful boxes
filled with circles and hexagons
small plastic or wooden pieces
instructions how to move them
that haven’t been followed in years
Keepsakes from a bygone era
of happy family times and the
three generations who played them
not that things aren’t good now
though so different in many ways
those boxes in the cabinet
keep us anchored to our past
its residual energy rising
to reassure us
Every now and then
we check inside to make sure
they’re still there
colorful boxes filled with
circles and hexagons
and imagine a day
when the past they share with us
will also be our future
