Friday
‘before weekend’
groceries and errands
and though anyone encountered
respectfully doesn’t mention
yesterday’s tragedy
one can feel it in the air
like an open wound
fresh and stinging

A family of Sri Lankans
living the Canadian dream
four kids, the youngest only two months
mom and friend
all cut down by the same “edged weapon”
dad wounded but survived
by one of their own

A nineteen-year-old student
from the old country
the motive
yet to be disclosed
now one of Ottawa’s if not
Canada’s worst mass murders

Those of us fortunate enough
left behind
this day
a little bit nicer to one another
