Hawker Tempests Scrambling

by Chris Sorrenti

Hawker Tempests taking off April 1945 by Charles E. Brown RED5080

A colourized version of a black & white photo (see below), taken at Volkel, Holland in April 1945.

Primarily used by the British, the Tempest emerged as one of the most powerful fighters of World War II, and at low altitude was the fastest single-engine propeller-driven aircraft of the war.

Due to its fast speed, it was especially successful at chasing and shooting down German V-1 flying bombs, in 1944, during the second blitz on London.
