Like Santa Claus?

by Chris Sorrenti

I

Forgive me Father
but it sounds almost
too good
to be true

A guy in a sleigh
pulled by flying reindeer
with a gift for everyone
able to stop at every house
around the world
in one night

Of course
we were an innocent kind of naïve
not yet fully conditioned
by and to our parents’ world
but with hard work
and the fear of God
we were getting there

II

And what do people do in Heaven?
all day and all night
if there is a day and night
do they sleep?
do they ever eat?
make love?
or maybe there’s something better
that obviously
I don’t have the brain capacity
to wrap my head around
...yet

III

Was always so excited and afraid
that I wouldn’t fall asleep
cause mom and dad said
Santa Claus wouldn’t come

But as we got older
our minds conditioned
to a new reality
of lines and boxes
endless loose ends
and those childhood
flights of fancy
could only be reached again
through the Christmas faces
of our grandchildren

IV

Like Santa Claus?
it’s a nice thought
but remember
in order to reach it
we must all
on our own
fall asleep
