That Drummer Boy

by Chris Sorrenti

Fleetwood cabinet stereo

I

A family favorite
from 1965
that first played on Dad’s
Fleetwood stereo
after us his pride and joy
vividly recalling the day
he first brought the music home

Each listen packed with
childhood Christmas memories
the Living Voices
harmonies extraordinaire
once more made real
when given a spin

II

Perfect accompaniment
as little brother and me
would pour over the
Sears Wish Book
dreaming of all those toys

By the time the special day arrived
it was so ratty
as we learned later
Mom always got two copies
one for herself
to order from

III

Being a child at the time
I wanted to be that drummer boy
projecting myself
into the nativity scene
gaze upon the special child
but didn’t tell anyone
as Mom and Dad
would sometimes tease
that boy has such an imagination

Now 60 years on
with inherited LP
still at hand
playing
if not on the turntable
then certainly in the mind
both it and this child at heart
having earned with distinction
every snap, crackle, and pop
