Every month it seems
a new challenge
this time ‘round
an abscessed gum
possible root canal

Tongue lashed by
dental hygienist
for not trying hard enough
to find a new doctor
despite being on the waiting list
should have asked her
if she’d be willing to share hers

Sure I’ve got insurance
to cover 80% of the cost
but at 3-5K
a substantial amount still
to come out of pocket
and sure I could put it
on a credit card
though I really don’t want
to go into more debt
especially at the current
interest rate

So here’s what I say
to those doctors and nurses
none of which
I can call my own
and that snooty little pharmacist
who told me
with a dirty grin
I have no more refills

From now on
unless it’s life or death
don’t expect to hear from me
don’t ask for my money
I’m off enjoying
the last years of my life
and too bad
if I don’t make it
to your operating tables
if I can’t live the way I want to
then I’d rather be dead!
