Comfort Zone by Chris Sorrenti
Off to 1400 St. Laurent
just behind the shopping centre
for a dentist appointment
my old stomping grounds
Previous dentist
at the firm
was a death camp survivor
read it in the newspaper
long after he retired
Survived the holocaust
by eating tooth cleaning powder
as a result swore
if he lived
he would become
what he did
But that’s neither
here nor there
the important thing
is I rarely go beyond
St. Laurent Boulevard
kind of the border
to where I lived
and played
when a younger man
Cause the ‘hood
I grew up in
is no longer there
as if the people and
houses remaining only
cardboard cutouts
on a movie set
decades since myself
the people I knew
acted there
What I will say
is that the few times
I have returned
the residual energy
in my mind
quite powerful
haunting
which in and of itself
was and is a good thing
