Thank You India

by Chris Sorrenti

It’s always interesting to me, when either we ourselves or someone close to us, rub elbows with a celebrity.

One time, I walked into my doctor’s office, and there sat the Right Honorable, Joe Clark, former head of the federal Progressive Conservative party, and Canada’s Prime Minister for a short time. I looked at him, he at me, and he could tell instantly I knew who he was. Keeping my manners however, I turned away to a magazine, and he got called in not long after. My doctor at the time was responsible for giving shots to Ottawans, travelling abroad. That’s about as big a celebrity I’ve come across in my own life.

A recent replay of an Alanis Morissette tune, on the radio, in celebration of the coming Canadian Thanksgiving, reminded me of another.

John, one of the guys I used to work with, was also a part-time musician, and had played with various local bands off and on over the years. It so happened, at some point in the past, he had also tried his hand at managing up and coming musicians, including a local girl, named Alanis Morissette.

I was shocked!

He added that Morissette was in her late teens at the time, and a Disco queen. She also made appearances on the local award-winning kids TV show, You Can’t Do That on Television.

John knew she had talent, but also that Disco had no lasting future, and told her this at least once, adding that she should be writing her own material. Not long after, she fired him, moved to L.A., and as the saying goes, the rest is history.
