PVR

by Chris Sorrenti

My only friend some days
it seems
electronics at first
I did not grasp
me the kind
hating to learn new technology
there’s no class
on how to use a cellphone
but Rogers Ignite
put that baby to bed
teaching me to drive
at the touch of remote

Long gone the days
of capturing the universe
on VHS
in the aftermath
quality of machines
went down
while cost went up
such is the will and way
of profit-based society
the tapes sit
collecting dust in the basement
waiting for another visit
from Just Junk

Now I can fly
past commercials
with the greatest of ease
good for high blood pressure
and when fully awake
watch a program in half the time
my only problem being
too many shows recording
not enough hours in a day
like the Dutch boy
trying to hold back the dam

My new hobby is
falling asleep on the couch
watching ghost hunters
