Ottawa’s transit system
once the envy of the world
too often these days
appears on life support

I walk out a couple blocks
to my local bus stop
just a short ride
mile
to the closest major intersection
and shopping plazas

Normally
a maximum wait of 15 minutes
today stretches into 30
longer
and in the middle of a heat wave
f-ing hot out here

Finally
I give up
sizzling in more ways than one
back home to call a cab
what I should have done
in the first place

Sadly
not that long ago
you could set your watch
to those buses
and the same distance
I could walk at a pace
in 15 minutes
