Oh how it aches

Prescribed meds
gone for the most part
opiate bottle empty
a week ago
taken as prescribed
back to acetaminophen and codeine
for the meantime
though have a lead on a possible doctor
thanks to a new lady friend

Oh how it aches

Brother took fourth months
to fully recover from his surgery
but the staples are finally out
lots of moisturizer and muscle cream
on the gash
to sooth the throb and burning
between relearning how to climb
and descend stairs

Oh how it aches

Spent a small fortune on taxis
this month
but was good to be out and about
paying the physical price in the evening
no matter what angle the leg
and knee rest

Oh how it aches

Worth it especially today
sipped Merlot and ate chicken wings
with a new lady friend
at her place
one of those ‘get to know ya’
conversations
toasting to wine and chocolate
how it all began in the first place
she’ll be over for pizza
in half a fortnight

So oh how it aches in a good way
