What Wouldn't Have Been Without You

by Chris Sorrenti

With you I can make new realities
With you I feel calm
With you I’m learning how to live again
With you my spirit sings of sorrow no more

With you I sense only a soft breeze
unlike the hurricanes I’ve had to endure
With you order is once more restored
so that our new chaos feels fine

With you and me I’m sure more lines will come
that finish and start with me and you
but we mustn’t rush them should we dear
what wouldn’t have been without you

Author's Note: A poem recently rediscovered in my Ideas document. Started in 2007, it’s part of a series written to my previous girlfriend, Dawn Davidson. Although we split up romantically in 2012, remained close friends until the end, when she passed away from Cancer in 2020.
