Whirlwind

by Chris Sorrenti

Westland Whirlwind that is...British WWII fighter.

I’ve always seen this plane as the hot rod of WWII fighters, simply due to its sleek, narrow lines, and massive, but equally sleek Rolls-Royce Peregrine engines in front.

Only 113 were built, and although it saw success as a fighter and in ground attack, only three squadrons were ever equipped with the Whirlwind. It was withdrawn from service in 1943, in favor of other contemporary fighters such as the Spitfire and P-51 Mustang, not to mention the P-38 Lightning, another twin-engine fighter.
