Funeral for a Crow by Chris Sorrenti
Walking to the bus stop
I come across commotion
in the air
Dozens of black birds
flying whirling dervish
around one another
more watching from
the houses
barren trees around
squawking
wailing as
some women do when
a loved one has passed
letting all the other birds
know what’s happened
flying in from miles around
Arriving at the bus shelter
there beside it
a crow lying still on
a fresh bed of snow
making it loud n’ clear
what all the fuss is about
Taking a seat in the shelter
I watch warily behind
a sheet of glass
reminded of a scene in
Alfred Hitchcock’s
The Birds
But I didn’t kill their friend
and the crows know it
they’re smart that way
one of the smartest
if not the smartest bird
in the animal kingdom
and they never forget if
someone’s done them wrong
They tell me they have no idea
what happened
there were no eye witnesses
I send them my condolences
as the bus arrives
