It’s your clichéd Winter Wonderland
out there
definitely a white Christmas

The three of us call one another ‘boss’
though J and I refer to him as ‘the kid’
cause that’s what he was
when first started coming around
some ten odd years ago
about 14 or 15 at the time
a little on the heavy side

He supposedly lives on our street
but won’t give me his phone number
or address
though reliable enough to ring the doorbell
whenever there’s accumulation
if not vacationing with his family
down in Florida

Now at 24 thereabouts
baby fat turned to muscle
and 6 feet tall
quite the Goliath
brings his own shovel
though in the early days used ours

Told me what his name was years ago
though I’ll be damned if I can remember it
Abdul maybe
definitely Mediterranean complexion

We pay the kid $10 for a small load
$20 if it’s anything like today
and with Jason pushing 40
me at 65
the two of us consider it
money well spent
