So far
all I have is a good title
but the dice have been cast
snake eyes or double sixes?
all in the plan
not of my making

What I can do
carry kennel reassembled
cleaned of years of dust
initial communication
with the proper authorities
established
what must be carried out

We give her extra snuggles
while still possible
as I hesitate to fill out the form
forty dollar fee seems trivial
in light of the overall financial calamity
but at fifteen she’s in good health
and they’ll find her a new home
only the second of nine lives

While
hypothetical budget has been tabled
and the situation appears quite grim
the only consolation
been through periods like this before
...and survived
an older and wiser man

But the die has been cast
double sixes or snake eyes?
all depends on
the other cards in one’s hand
like a phone number being identified
insolvency to be solved
until the whole affair put in order
only a few more restless nights
and after all that
I have a good title
and maybe even a good poem
