Now I Can Die

by Chris Sorrenti

Of-course I don’t mean that seriously, but have you ever been searching for something? Something you had and lost in your childhood, or early part of life. Thinking if I could only see it again, experience it visually, or even hold it in my hand, then I can die.

There are songs I’ve been searching for a good part of my life. Never found out who the artists were, or the true title of the songs. I do searches here and there, with what I think might be the titles (based on lines in the tunes) on YouTube, or Google, but to no avail.

Call me a sentimental fool, but one of my favorite memories is from when I was 14 years old (1972), yet to write poetry, but very impressionable, sensitive to everything around me, including music and TV. It was my first year living in Ottawa, and there was an espionage type TV series playing once a week in the evenings.

Starring Tony Curtis and Roger Moore, both ex-military, filthy rich playboy types, looking for adventure. A combination of good plots, action, intrigue, and humor, in exotic locales. What I especially loved about the show though was its theme song, which I would describe as beautifully haunting, as some of the songs I would catch on the radio. Even more so in combination with the images that played out through the opening credits.

Thanks to the Internet, and social media, long standing questions are sometimes and unexpectedly answered. Through a chance posting of one of many groups I belong to or follow on Facebook, I finally found out the name of the show. And now I can die.

Below are the opening credits to the TV show, The Persuaders, with the theme song, composed by John Barry. The picture quality isn’t the greatest, but considering the show ran only in 1971-72 (Moore left to be James Bond), I’m happy to see it any way I can.

RIP to all three men mentioned above.
