Unthinkable

by Chris Sorrenti

She likes to go out in the backyard
completely fenced in
a coat of fur to keep her warm
inhale that crisp Autumn air
at fifteen, though not overweight
no longer able to climb the fence
squeeze through its few crevices
or maybe happy enough
to have lost the desire

Till that first snowfall she’ll be out there
where all of her kind should be
as it’s been said before
they weren’t meant to be
cooped up indoors
but wild and free

And though of good health
her days with us may be numbered
times changed beyond our control
unfortunately
forcing us to make, if necessary
unpleasant, unwanted decisions
when it comes to keeping food on the table
roof over our heads

For now
we try not to think the unthinkable
contemplate worst case scenarios
keep the princess of the house well fed
give her as much love and attention
as possible
hoping inflation might somehow
deflate itself
as these darkening days of November
slip by
to the inevitable
