To Forrest Gump

by Chris Sorrenti

A friend recently asked if
I’d stopped writing poetry
my response
yes and no

No because
I’ve gone through periods
like this before
where inspiration
slows to a trickle
Stasis as I like to call it
when the creative heart
beats but once a minute

Yes because
sometimes I feel as though
I’ve said everything there is to say
like Forest Gump jogging
in the middle of the desert
with an army of runners
following close behind

I sudden stop
look around
and ask myself
why the hell am I doing this?
and then slowly
make my way back home
although the desert
feels like home now too

Meanwhile
I’m enjoying the vacation
wish you were here
and what do you know?
I just wrote a new poem
