When it gets above 30 Celsius
settle into a familiar routine
laying low during the day
keeping any movement
chores to a minimum
preparing to ride out the latest heat storm

Any errands are run early as possible
soon as the stores open
sometimes a deceptively cool breeze
greets one that early in the day
humidity already thick but bearable
heralding what’s sure to come

With windows and blinds closed
AC humming
wallow the hours away
with water, coffee, tea
light eating...cold meat and fruit
the size of supper depending on
how hot it is still

Afternoon naps often part of the agenda
waiting for the sun to reach its apex
knowing from experience
the temperature then slowly drops
if it gets down to 20
even better in the teens
restful sleep lies ahead

Today is the hottest so far this season
not much relief foreseen this evening
so the AC will be an all night affair
more of the same predicted for tomorrow
only two days from now
will there be some relief
at least till the next heat storm
