There Were the Trees by Chris Sorrenti
Over thirty years
this neighborhood has been home
and always there were the trees
tall and wide
here long before these houses put up
Across the decades
climate has changed
super cell thunderstorms giving way
to microbursts and tornadoes
more common as never before
One after another
those old trees have fallen
in addition to many new ones
lifeless bodies cut up and taken away
and with them
the shade of their canopy
In the barren fields around
only stumps marking the spot
where they all once stood
the few remaining wondering
if next time
It will be their turn
