Ode to the Honey Bee

by Chris Sorrenti

As a child, they were everywhere
one couldn’t walk without stepping on one
stings just a common part of summer
now, one should count themselves as lucky
to see one

For over the years, something has changed
world a different place, environmentally
species dying out all the time
some to mites and pesticides
and though one might not like or eat honey
without the lowly bee, there is no pollination
there are no crops

And there is no Man

Author's Note: Photo: Bumblebee, also noticeably absent in recent years. When I first moved into this neighbourhood, over 30 years ago, both species were a common sight, in what I now like to call the outer inner city. Over that period of time, due to urban sprawl, Ottawa has expanded way beyond this suburb, to become one of the largest cities in Canada, area-wise.
